History of GEMS
In Spring 2006 AAUW College Park and the diversity initiative STAND at the University of Maryland introduced GEMS as a monthly activity at Hyattsville Middle School. Nine students enrolled in GEMS. Now going into its ninth year, GEMS is a weekly, after-school enrichment class in three Prince George’s middle schools. Fifteen-twenty university students mentor and tutor more than 45 middle school girls. With the support of University of Maryland College Park Scholars programs, members of the community and Prince George’s County Council, we are able to offer girls in middle school a program with incentives and opportunities to excel in math and science.
GEMS Goals
- Enhance mathematical and scientific abilities
- Increase interest in pursuing studies and careers in science, engineering and mathematics
- Instill an appreciation of the social values of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
- Encourage parental support and student achievement
Our mission is to promote equity in education for all women and girls and increase the number of under-represented women in STEM.
GEMS Project Activities
- Weekly, after-school enrichment classes in mathematics and science with an emphasis on hands-on activities and scientific inquiry
- Outstanding UMD undergraduates in STEM programs serve as role models and mentors for middle school girls
- Field trips to math and science educational and research centers, such as, Bladensburg Waterfront Park, National Aquarium in Baltimore, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Patuxent Wildlife Center the National Academy of Sciences Koshland Museum, and the University of Maryland
- Forums with parents and family members on the importance of science and math, and preparing for a college education
